Memory Wall

An important component of our “Out of the Darkness” Community Walk is our Memory Wall. This is where we will honor the memory and celebrate the lives of our loved ones who have completed suicide.

Here we will remind the world, and ourselves, that our loved ones are not defined by the way they died.

On this Memory Wall, participants are invited to put up COPIES OF photographs of those loved ones lost to suicide. No photo copy should be larger than 8.5 x 11 inches. Photo collages are acceptable, as long as the collage fits on one 8.5 x 11 inch sheet. Please provide COPIES, not originals, of photographs, since we cannot be responsible for damages. Photos can be copied for a nominal charge via area scan/copy machines at Walgreens, Wal Mart, etc.

COPIES OF special written items such as notes, poems or obituaries may also be posted on the Memory Wall. We will also have “Foot Notes” - foot-shaped pieces of blank paper - available for those who wish to write a note to/about a lost loved one, OR to a survivor or surviving family. All written items should, again, fit on a single piece of paper, no larger than 8.5 x 11 inches. And again, please provide COPIES, not originals, of written works. We cannot be responsible for damages.

The Memory Wall will be made up of criss-crossed ribbon, allowing photos/written items to be tucked into place. No tape or tacks will be used, so as not to mar the items posted.

Participants are asked to please take home their photos/written items at the end of the Walk. Participants may also opt to leave the photos/written items as part of the permanent “Traveling Memorial Wall,” which will travel to area shopping malls, libraries, etc., with information about suicide prevention and about our Hampton Roads SOS/Survivors of Suicide Support Group. We will have waivers at the Walk for those who want items to become part of the permanent display.
