PICTORIAL OF 2009 OUT OF THE DARKNESS COMMUNITY WALK
(page 3 of 3)

With the conclusion of the ceremony everyone gathered behind the curtain of 1,000 cranes where the Walk would begin. Volunteers had made each in the tradition that if you faithfully fold 1,000 origami cranes, your prayers will be answered. Into each crane was folded a prayer for those who are suffering from depression and a prayer for those who have died by suicide. (See: Legend of the Cranes.)

Erik Harryman led us in the countdown 10..9..8..

Volunteers: Terry Pond, Austin Clark, Beth Reavis, & Capt. Jon Greene carried the banner as a statement of our mission -- "Walking to Prevent Suicide".

The Walk was the largest of 200 Out of the Darkness Community Walks across the country. Over 1,800 Walkers were registered to take steps to bring depression and suicide into the light.

To support those who walked every 1/4 mile there was a sign of affirmation or information about depression and suicide. Walking was an opportunity to learn and to reflect...it was a personal "healing path."

Many walked out of concern of the 31,000 people who died from Suicide and also in hope that people will seek treatment for depression. Over 90% of those who die from Suicide were suffering from a diagnosable psychological disorder -- primarily major depression. Depression is a disease; it is a medical not moral issue. And, depression is a disease that can be treated. So, suicide can be prevented. As we raise awareness, we can save lives.

Six Hampton Roads Universities participated in the Walk.

Hundreds walking together formed a line edging the Lake.

After people finished walking or if they participated just in being at the Walk they were invited to select a crane to keep as a memento.

At our After-Walk Picnic complimentary Italian Ice provided by Rita's Italian Ice (Nimmo Parkway, Va. Beach) was a well-appreciated treat!

Many great sponsors supported our great event.

The After-Walk Picnic provided an opportunity for people to meet each other and to share stories and food. Wonderful music was generously provided by the Ben Phelps Project.

As a gift (not a raffled prize) the Hampton Roads Survivors of Suicide Support Group gave a beautiful quilt designed with the crane pattern.

A beautiful quilt made by Patty Reed was given as a gift. Although receiving the quilt was very emotional for two sisters, they were very happy to receive such a gift.

It was our intention that everyone who participated in our Out of the Darkness Community Walk, left with a sense of awareness and peace.

We hope these pictures have captured the faces and features of our Out of the Darkness Community Walk.

We hope the comments on the next page (click here) , from people there, may capture a lot of the heart.
